Incense, marigolds, the river, all of it hits you before you've even in Haridwar. When you walk toward Har Ki Pauri and the ghat, you’ll slowly see that there are hundreds of people around you and priests swinging fire over the Ganga and bells going off from three directions at once.
Then the Ganga Aarti here is done every evening. It's not a performance for tourists, it's been happening daily for longer than anyone can track. You stand at the ghat railing and watch the diyas go out on the water and something about it just cuts through whatever noise you came here carrying.
Rishikesh, where we’ll be visiting the very next day, is going to make you feel completely different. Same river but narrower, faster, greener on both banks.
Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula are the two bridges everyone photographs but the better version of being there is crossing one on foot, slowly, and looking down at the water moving underneath you.
The ashrams along the bank are the working kind. Morning prayers at 5am, residents who've been there for years, nothing set up for an audience.
Triveni Ghat in the evening draws maybe a fifth of the crowd that Har Ki Pauri does. The aarti is the same fire, the same river, but quieter. Some people actually prefer it.
